I really did not expect the college to make me think this much about what I am doing and who I am.
- O. Hayward, Student
Waldorf College is an independent college for 16 - 20 year olds. It has offered a unique curriculum uniting a broad range of practical and academic experiences into a whole journey, which is accredited and leads to further and higher education.
In the past 3 years, Waldorf College has suffered from a decline in student numbers and despite the best efforts of the trustees and staff, the numbers have not picked up enough to be able to afford to keep the College open next year without additional financial support. So very reluctantly we have had to make the decision to close the College to students for next year.
There will be short courses running from January 2011 in a variety of subjects for young people and these will be posted up on this website in the Autumn 2010.
We are researching funding and different models of education for the 16 - 19 year olds because if it is likely that university places and jobs will become more scarce in the near future, then young people will need an education that supports them in creating their own educational pathways and work. Therefore we want to support a new initiative for authentic youth education and to help young people who are looking for new thinking and ways of working together.
Waldorf College is 10 years old this year and to mark the occasion, we invited all past and present students, parents, tutors and host families to come to a weekend of workshop and performance in Stroud from Friday 9th - Sunday 11th July.
After an informal gathering on Friday evening at Upper Grange, homemade pizzas round the campfire, there was a Cabaret Evening of performances on Saturday evening (July 10th) by past and present students - many talented musicians, actors, writers, and circus performers have come out of the College over the years and this was a great opportunity to show their talents to an appreciative audience.
On Sunday there was time for people to talk about what place the college had in their lives followed by a simple closing ceremony.
It was lovely to see the many people who came during the weekend and those who weren't able to make it were remembered as well.
As a parent of a former student wrote:
My wish is that the impulse that brought the Waldorf College to life may not die, but may re-appear transformed as a place where young people can meet themselves and the world in a wholesome way. The world needs it.
